The Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane Borough, Councillor David Leeks accompanied by his wife Amanda, invited Hampshire Harmony to perform as guests at the Spring charity concert at The Anvil on Saturday 2 March, 2024.
Showcasing the Basingstoke Area Youth Orchestra and Choir, the concert featured some of the best musical talent from the region. Wind, strings, percussion, guitar and vocal ensembles performed well-known favourites all in aid of charities, Shopmobility Basingstoke and Citizens Advice Basingstoke and Tadley.
Since we celebrate our 60th anniversary this year, we were delighted to take part in this special evening. Taking to the stage in the first half, we sang a beautiful musical arrangement of Emily Dickinson’s poem ‘Heart, We Will Forget Him’, followed by the uplifting ‘Anthem’ from Chess.
Finally, joining us to sing Coldplay’s Viva La Vida were members of the Basingstoke Area Youth Choir – a fantastic group of young singers who performed three of their own songs just before us in the evening’s line-up.
Commenting on our performance and the concert in general, Hampshire Harmony Musical Director, Clare Oliver said:
“Congratulations on your super performance! Anthem was the best you have ever sung it and a lady in the lift afterwards said your performance was the highlight of the evening for her, and that you were superb!
“As a professional musician myself, it is heartening to see so many talented young musicians coming through the ranks. And they were so professional and well behaved. A real credit to Basingstoke!”

Thank you to all the choir members who took part, particularly to Aby Crips, performing in her first concert just days after a successful audition. Special thanks to Clare and Jonathan (our pianist) for making sure we were performance-ready! Our thanks, too, to the Anvil staff and BAYOC for their support and liaison with our MD, Clare Oliver, before the event and on the day.
